Accurate targeting - not bigger ad budgets - is what filled the seats.
That's the one-line answer. The longer answer took us 15 institutes, a lot of wasted Google Ads spend before we course-corrected, and a shift toward retargeting, WhatsApp/SMS follow-up, and localized landing pages to actually prove it. Read this 6-min breakdown from our experience; it's everything we'd tell a fellow institute before they spend another rupee on generic ads.
We're Marko & Brando, a full-funnel digital marketing agency in Kolkata, and education lead generation is one of the sectors we've worked in the longest. Over our 9 years in this business, we've run enrollment and admissions campaigns for 15+ schools and institutes, from K-12 schools to professional and management institutes, handling everything from website builds to paid media to social media management under one roof. We don't outsource strategy and hand you a report; we sit inside the funnel with our clients, from the first ad click to the counselor's follow-up call, because in education, a "lead" only counts when it becomes an admitted student. This blog is our honest, data-backed breakdown of what worked, what didn't, and why using our work with BIBS as the core case study.
When BIBS (an institute for BBA & MBA-pursuing students) came to us, the brief wasn't "run some ads." It was "help us compete for serious MBA aspirants in a market flooded with generic institute marketing." That meant we couldn't treat school marketing strategies as a single-channel problem; the website, the design, the SEO, and the social presence all had to work as one system.
We rebuilt BIBS's website around a single job: move a visiting MBA aspirant from "just researching" to "form submitted" in as few steps as possible. That meant fast load times, mobile-first architecture most MBA research happens on phones between classes or commutes, and program pages structured around what aspirants actually search for: placements, ROI, faculty, admission process instead of generic institute copy.

For student enrollment marketing, design isn't decoration; it's conversion. We restructured navigation so prospective students could get from "Programs" to "Apply Now" in one or two clicks, added sticky enquiry forms, and used social proof (placement stats, alumni outcomes, rankings) above the fold instead of buried in a footer. Every design decision was tested against one metric: did it reduce drop-off on the enquiry form?
Generic institute SEO chases broad terms like "best MBA college." We went narrower and more intent-driven: city-specific and program-specific searches, comparison content, and admissions-process content that ranks because it's genuinely useful, not just keyword-stuffed. This is also where education lead generation compounds over time: paid ads stop the moment you stop paying, but ranked organic content keeps bringing in enquiries months later at zero marginal cost.
Rather than running social as a brand-awareness channel disconnected from admissions, we treated BIBS's social presence as a lead gen for institutes engine retargeting audiences who'd already visited the website, running placement/alumni story content that built trust before a form was ever filled, and feeding warm audiences into the same follow-up system as paid leads.
The result of integrating all four wasn't four separate wins; it was one funnel where design supported SEO, SEO supported ads, and ads fed a social retargeting loop. That's the difference between "we ran a campaign" and "we built a system."
This is the part every institute marketing head should read carefully, because it's counterintuitive.
Broad-match Google Search campaigns targeting terms like "MBA colleges near me" or "best management institute" looked good on impressions and clicks. They looked terrible on cost-per-admission. Why:
Low intent matching: Broad keywords pull in students comparing 20 institutes at once, most of whom were never a fit for BIBS's specific program.
No follow-up urgency: A form filled from a cold search ad often went cold within hours if the follow-up wasn't immediate.
High CPCs, low conversion: Education keywords are expensive, and generic targeting meant we were paying premium CPCs for low-quality enquiries.
Retargeting - Instead of only chasing new, cold traffic, we built retargeting layers around everyone who had visited a program page, started (but not finished) an enquiry form, or engaged with organic/social content. These weren't cold leads; they were warm audiences who already knew BIBS existed. Cost per qualified lead dropped noticeably compared to cold search traffic, because we were spending money to convert intent that already existed rather than manufacturing it from scratch.
WhatsApp/SMS Follow-Up - In education, speed-to-lead decides admissions. A student who fills a form and doesn't hear back within minutes has usually filled three more forms with competing institutes by evening. We plugged in automated WhatsApp and SMS follow-up the moment a form was submitted program details, next steps, and a human counsellor callback trigger instead of relying on email alone, which most MBA aspirants don't check in real time.
Localized Landing Pages - Instead of sending all traffic to one generic "Apply Now" page, we built landing pages tailored to specific programs, campuses, and even city-level search intent. A student searching for an MBA program in a specific city landed on a page that spoke directly to that context, not a one-size-fits-all page trying to serve every audience at once. This alone improved form completion rates versus the generic landing page BIBS was using before.
The pattern across all 15 institutes was consistent: broad, generic campaigns generate volume; targeted, integrated systems generate admissions. Education lead generation isn't about which single channel you invest in; it's about whether your website, SEO, social, and ad spend are pointed at the same funnel instead of working in isolation. That's the shift that moved BIBS (and the other institutes we've worked with) from "leads on a spreadsheet" to seats filled in a classroom.

We've directly run education lead generation campaigns for 15+ schools and institutes, including hands-on work on BIBS's web development, UX/UI, SEO, and social media not a single-channel engagement.
Our team builds and executes across the full stack: development, design, SEO, paid media, and marketing automation (WhatsApp/SMS), which is what let us diagnose why generic Google Ads underperformed instead of just reporting that they did.
This isn't theory. It's a documented before/after from a real institute client, with channel-level reasoning any admissions or marketing head can apply to their own funnel.
We're naming what didn't work (generic Google Ads) as openly as what did. An agency that only shows you wins isn't showing you the whole picture.
If your institute is stuck spending on ads that generate enquiries but not admissions, we've likely already solved that exact problem for a school or institute like yours.
